NOBODY seems wholly sure why he became known as Yamaha. Some reckon it was for the reason that his small flat in Algiers was next to a motorcycle repair work~. Others say he got the nickname for the way he weaved from one side crowds like a scooter through traffic. His real name was Hocine Dihimi. As Yamaha he was Algerian football’s most famous fan.

Yamaha was an act on his own, a curtain-raiser which time the national team played at the vast July 5th stadium. He would gradation barricades and leap on to the running track around the realm, chased by police as tens of thousands cheered him on. He mocked politicians in the VIP seats, made friends through the players. He was, according to his obituary in El Watan newspaper, “a national figure, for the joy he mobilised, a representative of a youth that wants to enjoy life, a vivaciousness that has grown thanks to football”.

Yamaha died young, shot by gunmen suspected of killing him for the cause that of an irreligious frivolity he represented in a time, the intervening-1990s, when Algeria was trapped violently between Islamism and iron-fisted regulation. Thousands marched at his funeral, chanting “Algiers is not Kabul”.

Over the next fortnight of Africa’s first World Cup, much will be said about the societal impact of football on the continent. Some statements resolution sound trite and superficial. Not in Algeria, where the national team has to a great extent generated a fervent, powerful sort of patriotism.

Ask Mohamed Maouche, a 74-year-bad former player whose commitment to his country’s cause was in the same state that he served time in a French jail. Maouche smiles at the truth that more than half the current Algerian squad were born in France; their go to the land of their parents or grandparents echoes a distant more perilous journey he and his contemporaries once made.

Maouche’s account is like something from the pages of John Le Carré. In his in good time 20s, he, like many of the best Algerian footballers, crossed the Mediterranean to chase a career in France, Maouche with Stade de Reims, a defray by shares on their way to contesting the first European Cup final in countervail to Real Madrid. By early 1958 he and his compatriots, Rachid Mekloufi and Mustapha Zitouni, were put ~ the shortlist for the France squad to play in that year’s World Cup. As Algerians, they were French colonial subjects.

Selection, yet a professional honour, could hardly be viewed in isolation from a enmity for independence they supported and that had turned brutal. So unit April weekend, Maouche, Mekloufi, Zitouni and eight other Algerians playing in the French combination secretly left France. “It was all meticulously arranged, though we knew there was no [such thing as] zero risk,” Maouche recalls from his home in Ben Aknoun.

They were limit for the headquarters of the exiled Front de Liberation Nationale, the FLN, in Tunisia. Most made it near the front of France caught on that Zitouni had not turned up for a France be in possession of-together, and several clubs had noted the absence of their Algerian stars from instruction. But Maouche, one of the ringleaders, was arrested at the Swiss limit. Eventually he would join his compatriots in an enterprise that would pull the world’s attention to the cause of Algeria.

The FLN team, including players who had given up the risk of a World Cup with France, toured the Middle East and Far East and played from one side of to the other Eastern Europe, waving the flag of a not-yet-liberated Algeria. They dazzled their audiences. “We were the good precursors of independence,” Maouche says.

The FLN team may gain been the best side Algeria ever had, although Maouche would at no time demean the talents the country took to successive World Cups in the 1980s. He was in successi~ the management staff of the team who beat West Germany in their perforation 1982 World Cup match and failed to reach the knockout stages only because of a notorious, contrived draw between Austria and the Germans.

The 2010 crew has less of their flair but has some of the rapier that shaped Maouche’s FLN brigade. The fiery matches — two group games and one tiebreaker — that steered Algeria to these finals at the expenditure of Egypt were so charged with tension that attacks on Egyptian businesses in Algiers followed and missiles were hurled end the windows of the Algerian team bus in Cairo. And Egypt are the champions of Africa.

“The team has deep-rooted in the last few weeks,” says a hopeful Maouche. “We be obliged a chance of making the second round, but we must thump Slovenia in the first match if we are to do that.”

DeSean Jackson (10) of the Eagles is assisted off the field Sunday after absorbing a hit from the Falcons' Dunta Robinson. (Al Bello/Getty Images)

The NFL imposed cyclopean fines Tuesday on three players for dangerous and flagrant hits highest weekend and warned that, starting with this week's games, infuriate conduct will be cause for suspension.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was docked $75,000 US on Tuesday, while New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson self-reliance lose $50,000 each.

In the past, players were either fined or ejected during the term of illegal hits. However, after the series of recent flagrant tackles, distinct of which resulted in concussions, the NFL ramped up the castigation.

Football operations chief Ray Anderson indicated the suspensions could start this moment -- that is, involving play from last weekend's games. However, NFL prolocutor Greg Aiello said the league wanted to give teams fair notice and would send a memo Wednesday, outlining the changes.

Ravens tight period Todd Heap took a vicious hit from Meriweather that Heap called "individual of those hits that shouldn't happen." Robinson and the Eagles' DeSean Jackson were knocked off of their game after a frightening collision in which Robinson launched himself be pointed first to make a tackle. Both sustained concussions.

Robinson is appealing the re~d.

Robinson 'disappointed' by ruling

"I am disappointed by the NFL's controlling," Robinson said in a statement. "I recognize the goal is to patronize all players from the Pee Wee level on up. However, this was a handle roughly-bang hit situation where I did not lead with my helmet, and therefore I will appeal.

"Although it was a violent happy remark, my hit did not violate the NFL's rules, and I was playing the plan the way I always have. I am not a dirty operator and have never been characterized as one."

Harrison was punished as far as concerns his hit on Mohamed Massaquoi. His hit on Joshua Cribbs did not outline in the fine, although it also caused a concussion; the band said Monday it was permissible.

Harrison's agent, Bill Parise, called the slender "staggering" and said it would be appealed. He emphasized that neither play drew a penalty.

"I've talked to James, and he's highly upset," Parise said. "He's quite confused about how to engage in ~ football."

The league noted Harrison is a repeat offender; he was fined $5,000 because of unnecessary roughness in Pittsburgh's win over Tennessee on Sept. 19.

In correspondence to the three players, Anderson said: "Future offences will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension."

Massaquoi's active element, Brian Ayrault, didn't think the league was tough enough on Harrison.

'Not going to be a deterrent'

"Harrison has made $20 the public over the past three years, and they only fined him $75,000?" he before-mentioned. "To me, that's not going to be a deterrent. The Browns are to all appearance going to be without a starter this week. I don't have in mind that fine is a deterrent or fair to competitive balance.

"The discipline did not fit the crime."

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith wouldn't immediately answer whether the league had consulted with the union before toughening up the penalties, expression simply that he talked to Commissioner Roger Goodell every day.

"We are going to apply the mind at this issue along with the league," Smith said at one event in St. Paul, Minn. "I am for anything that keeps our players safer. But at the like time, I don't look at everything in a simple the world in miniature."

Browns president Mike Holmgren said it was important to have gamble video reviewed by officials familiar with the nuances of tackling.

"I ponder most of the time you can look at a play being of the cl~s who a coach and say, 'You know what? That didn't accept to happen,"' said Holmgren, the former Seattle and Green Bay coach. "And in that case sometimes you look at a play and say, 'Unavoidable. It was honorable one of those things.'

"I don't know if they are going to issue that distinction yet, and I think it's a very serious distinction."

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin favoured stricter enforcement of helmet hits, even supposing he still thought Harrison's tackle on Massaquoi was legal.

"I opine we need to safeguard the men that play this game to the most wise of our abilities and make it as safe as we be possible to," he said.

The men being safeguarded didn't necessarily agree. Vikings defensive close Ray Edwards predicted players wouldn't change how they hit.

"If we breed fined, we get fined," he said. "But the suspension stuff? That's alluring it a little too far. I mean, it is football. We tot~y signed up to play this game. Things happen. You can't make some change in the way you play the game. Sometimes that's how you breed touchdowns."

ENGLAND were denied a victory they just about deserved in their opening World Cup game in the present life last night when a terrible error by goalkeeper Robert Green ingenious a goal to the United States and allowed the Americans to emanate with a 1-1 draw that still leaves both teams by realistic chances of qualifying from Group C.

Fabio Capello has agonised ready which goalkeeper to pick for England and his worst nightmare came truthful when Green committed the sort of howler that will haunt him in spite of the rest of his career.

Five minutes before half-time, with England leading thanks to a well-taken Steven Gerrard goal, Clint Dempsey was allowed to depend just outside the box. His speculative effort from 20 yards looked innoxious but Green allowed the half-hit effort to squirm through his hands and from one side of to the other the line.

Green’s mistake adds to a long think best of desperate errors by England keepers in World Cup games, single in kind that goes back to Peter Bonetti’s travails in the quarter-final against West Germany in 1970 and includes Ronaldinho’s detestable lob over David Seaman in the quarter-final in 2002.

Capello mouldiness now decide whether to stick with Green for the game opposed to Algeria on Friday or switch to the erratic David James or the unskilled Joe Hart.

Afterwards Capello said he was “very happy” by Green. “He played well,” said the Italian. He too praised the performances of Gerrard and Frank Lampard, adding: “A haphazard of players played very well.” Gerrard, the England captain, defended his keeper. “It’s unit of those things. People have spoken about the ball and it is tricky,” Gerrard declared. “But we have to support him and he might advance on to win us a game. The important thing in the primitive match is not to lose. We must now try to win seven points. Unfortunately we let in a poor goal and couldn’t be of use on to win.”

Gerrard gave England the perfect start subsequent to just four minutes, taking a clever layoff from Emile Heskey, charging into the forfeiture area and planting the ball wide of Tim Howard. England had a great quantity the better of the second half and created several good chances, including a barbarous shot from Emile Heskey that was well saved by the USA keeper.

Earlier in the lifetime Argentina threw down a gauntlet to the other World Cup favourites by a victory in their first and probably toughest fixture in Group B. Diego Maradona’s team bray Nigeria 1-0 thanks to a headed goal by former Manchester United vindicator Gabriel Heinze after just six minutes at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Argentina remained in charge because most of the rest of the game, with their supporters in unimpeached voice.

The fans were regularly stimulated into song and noisy drumming through an excellent performance from Lionel Messi, the World Player of the Year, who reproduced a great deal of of the dazzling football that has characterised his season for Barcelona. In the other Group B companion, South Korea beat Greece 2-0 to go top of the lake, above Argentina on goal difference.

Finally, three frighteningly long hours after leaving Baku, the oil-valuable city on the Caspian Sea that is the capital of Azerbaijan, the taxi arrives at Gabala FC, the newly come and utterly improbable home of one of the greatest central defenders in the history of Arsenal and England.

Read Simon Barnes on Capello's mistakes and live coverage of the World Cup latest at The Times's of recent origin website

England’s World Cup campaign was hit by more problems yesterday when Ledley King was ruled out for up to three weeks and the rudimentary signs of dissent emerged over Fabio Capello’s selection mode of management.

David James is understood to be unhappy at being overlooked toward Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the United States, in what one. Robert Green’s gaffe cost England victory.

James’s ire centres on a difference of opinion over his fitness with the England negotiation, who feel that he is still struggling with a minor knee complaint they believe has hindered his performances in training.

The Portsmouth goalkeeper is indestructible stone that he is 100 per cent fit, however, and is afflicted at not being given an opportunity to stake his claim.

James was left completely of England’s final warm-up match, against the Platinum Stars, hold out week, when Green and Joe Hart played for 45 minutes reaped ground, and remains down the pecking order should Capello omit the unfortunate West Ham United goalkeeper for Friday’s group C enterprise against Algeria.

James appeared lukewarm to the offer of a handshake from Franco Baldini, the England captain-~ manager, as he left the pitch after the warm-up at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Capello wish not be moved by any rumblings of discontent from the putting in order room, though, particularly as he is believed to have been unimpressed by James’s response since being left out.

The manager said yesterday that he will study Green’s mental state control selecting his goalkeeper to face Algeria. “We have to wait to decide up~ Green,” Capello said. “We will think about this puzzle psychologically.”

Green began rebuilding his reputation yesterday by apologising to the race. “I walked in at half-time, said sorry to the mouth and I apologise to however many million people at home taken in the character of well,” he said. “The manager has to answer whether he choose stick with me, but the important thing is I’m easy and willing to work on it mentally.”

King’s groin mischief is worse than first feared and the defender is not expected to subsist available until the quarter-finals at the earliest.

Capello defended his preference against the US and was critical of James Milner, who is expected to exist replaced by Gareth Barry for the match against Algeria. “I made ~t one mistakes, absolutely not,” Capello insisted yesterday.

“The USA played well, on the contrary Green’s mistake and his save in the second moiety were their only chances. Milner played normally but he struggled for the reason that of the speed of the right back. After he was booked I determined to change because it was possible he would get sent facing.”

Despite the poor performance, Capello gave the squad a age off yesterday. Green was among those to spend time on the golf pursue, while other players enjoyed time with their families.

Franz Beckenbauer, the iconic form of German football, has accused England of reverting to the noxious old days of “kick and rush” under Fabio Capello.

England began their World Cup campaign with an unconvincing 1-1 draw against the United States and, with Germany making a strong start by beating Australia 4-0, Beckenbauer believes that Capello’s team want sophistication.

“What I saw from the English had very in some degree to do with football,” Beckenbauer, who won World Cup winner’s medals with West Germany as captain in 1974 and coach in 1990, reported. “It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the of advanced age times of kick and rush.

“I am not sure on the supposition that Capello can still change much there. The English are being punished on account of the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League viewed like they use better foreign players from all over the world.”

The England manager will agree with Beckenbauer’s comment about the lack of parts at his disposal, having bemoaned the fact that barely a third of the players who started games in the Premier League be unexhausted season were English. But he is certain to be irked through the disparaging remarks about his team’s style of move.

He will hope for a demonstration of his players’ qualification against Algeria on Friday, with Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole expected to ~ on despite missing training yesterday.

Another source of tension is Germany’s fellowship with the adidas Jabulani, the controversial World Cup ball that has been used in the Bundesliga more domestic competitions in the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland.

Asked if he felt those rivals had gained one unfair advantage, Jamie Carragher, the England defender, said: “That is exactly which we were saying last night. That’s obvious. The sphere is very different. Every training session we do we always ~le by passing 30 or 40 yards to each other just towards that reason alone. I’m sure it has helped them.”

The Bundesliga has a deal through adidas to supply its ball — likewise the Germany national team — whereas the Premier League has a contract with Nike and the England general team with Umbro.

England have practised with the ball every sunshine since they began their pre-tournament training camp in Austria in c~tinuance May 17, but did not use it in a match until their penultimate warm-up fixture, against Japan, just 12 days face to face with the World Cup began.

Thomas van Schaik, a spokesman for adidas, said: “There was an in-depth presentation in February where we presented the just discovered technology and underlined the requirement to get used to it because it is a different ball and a different technology. We underlined this thesis. At the same time we also supplied all the federations through the balls.”
