Jessica Ennis wins Hypo meeting in Gotzis

The Sheffield trained contestant finished on 6,689 points — 42 points down on the entire she amassed at last summer’s World Championships in Berlin only still a healthy 117 ahead of second-placed Tatyana Chernova, of Russia.
Leading through 277 points overnight, after a commanding opening day that included a corporal best of 14.25 metres in the shot put, Ennis saw her lead being steadily eroded on Sunday as she struggled to cope by the conditions.

She managed exact 6.13m in the long jump, well short of her special best of 6.54m, and a javelin throw of 43.40m, eight metres inferior than Olympic bronze medallist Chernova.
Going into the final event, the 800m, Ennis had seen her favorable opportunity cut to just 77 points by Chernova, but she held her fortify to pass the Russian on the final bend, finishing first in 2min 11.20sec.
In doing in such a manner, she became only the third Briton to win in Gotzis, for Lewis and Daley Thompson. It also banished the ghost of Ennis’s utmost appearance at the meeting when she sustained a foot that injury that forced her to miss the Olympics.
Ennis said she a little while ago hoped to attack Lewis’s 10-year-old British label of 6,831 points at the European Championships in Barcelona in July.
“Today’s been uncompliant but it felt quite comfortable,” she said. “I wish we had had squeamish conditions and that’s why I’m looking help on to Barcelona.
“It’s going to be hot and there’s a fast track there so hopefully I can be in possession of more out of my performance.”
