Two of the workers were treated for slight injuries and released, and the third was hospitalized with a broken leg. The British singer was not present when the accident occurred Wednesday night.

"There has been no discussion of canceling the event" scheduled for Saturday, said Francisco de Anda, a spokesman for Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, which is in charge of the country's pre-Hispanic sites.

The institute said there was no damage to the 1,200-year-old Mayan ruins. De Anda said the stage was put up at a distance from the pyramid and temples, precisely to avoid any potential damage.

De Anda said the upper lighting rails of the metal structure collapsed onto the stage area. The rails are used to hold spotlights and other technical equipment.

He said outside experts had been called in to review the structure to ensure it — or a replacement — could be safely installed.

Some Mexicans have opposed holding concerts at the ruin site, claiming it demeans their cultural significance and endangers the stone structures.

More than a half dozen concerts have been held at Chichen Itza since Luciano Pavarotti sang there in 1997. In 2008, tenor Placido Domingo drew about 4,000 spectators to a concert without incident.

Chichen Itza was named one of "New Seven Wonders of the World" in 2007.

Placido Domingo's surgeons removed a cancerous polyp on his colon when the renowned singer and music director was in hospital last week.

On Monday, his spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer said the malignancy was localized and Domingo is expected to make a full recovery.

Domingo, 69, was released Sunday after surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and has been ordered to rest for six weeks.

The operation was laparoscopic, a minimally invasive procedure in which a small incision is made in the abdomen, Seltzer said.

Domingo's return to the stage depends on how fast he heals, she said.

The Spanish-born tenor has embarked on a world tour as the lead in Simon Boccanegra, a baritone role he's long said he wanted to sing. Domingo was performing in Tokyo last week when he suffered abdominal pain.

He'll miss some scheduled performances in Zurich and London, but is expected to return to the role April 16 with a performance at Milan's Teatro alla Scala.

The world-famous tenor is known for setting a breakneck pace, which includes roles as general director of both the Los Angeles Opera and the Washington National Opera.
